1.Heredity is the passing on of genetic traits from parents to offspring.

2. The first person to notice this was Aristotle. He said " were each a mixture of our parents traits, with the father supplying life force and the mother supplying the building blocks.

3. The first person to start studying heredity in an modern way was Gregor Mendel.

4. We all have Chromosomes.

5. Human cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes.

6. Gene is an section of DNA in an specific location on an chromosomes.

7. Polygenic trait is many Genes.

8. Somatic is any cell in an animal body that is not an sperm or an egg.

9. Some plants have polyploid cells- They have more than two sets in each chromosome.

10. Every one inharets two alleles from their parents.

11. Reginald C. Punnett invented the punnett square as a way to diagram the outcome of a particular cross breeding experiment.

12. Ear wax and armpit sweat are produced by the same type of gland.

13. Pleiotropic is the gene affects how wet your ear wax is, and how much you stinck.

Heredity Crash Course ( Dajhauna Wormley )

 1. Heredity is the passing on of traits from parents to offspring
2. Aristotle said " we're each a mixture of our parents traits with the father supplying life force and the mother supplying the building blocks "
3. Human Cells have 23 pairs of Chromosomes
4. Genes are sections of DNA
5. There are specific locations on chromosomes that contain information that determines a trait.
6. Polygenic Triat - a bunch of different genes working together.
7. Pleiotropic - a single gene can influence how multiple traits can be expressed ( ex: color )
8. Mendelian Trait - example .. dryness or wetness of earwax located at same spot ( chromosome 16 )
9. Gametes - sex cells
10. Polyploid cells mean they have more than two sets of chromosomes In each cell.
11. When there are two alelles that decide the outcome of the specific trait, one of those could be dominant and the other recessive.
12. Just because an allele is recessive , does not meant is less common in each when ethic material.
13. Everyone inherits two alleles from their parents.
14. Phenotype is expressed physically.
15. Males are XY and females are XX.

Dajhauna's Chapter 5-7 Questions

Chapter 5-
24.
Yes I would give the police a sample of the hair  because that should be very accurate and narrow it down to the suspect and who the suspect is.

25. List 3 ways in which DNA fingerprints have been used:
To track criminals
Identify murder victims
To identify soldiers killed in combat

26.DNA samples can give a lot of information and the person might also give a DNA sample so that they won't look guilty.

27. The courts might throw out the evidence because the case was already solved and the murdered was found already. Keeping the DNA could violate someone's privacy.

28.
No but yes DNA can violate someone's privacy because DNA test can give more information that a fingerprint can. The FBI or the people working on the case should be responsible for storing someone's DNA so that way it can be kept in a more safe place.
Chapter 6 -
29. If I were Elsa and John, i would not use the hormones on the cows because most customers are afraid to drink milk from these cows because they don't believe that this milk is 100% safe.

30. Biotech labs produce improved forms of crops, super sized animals and more healthful foods.

31. Animals rights activist are against using BGH on cows because they do not believe that people should use chemicals on animals.

32. Some people think that biotech engineers are "playing God" because they try to create new things and interfere with the natural resources and things that God has already created, I do believe this is a true statement.

33. Vocabulary

genetic engineering- deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic materials

selective breeding-the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits

transgenic-denoting an organism that contains genetic material into which DNA from an unrelated organism has been artificially introduced

Chapter 7 -
34. Rico and Tim should be treated differently because Tim isn't growing because of his hormones, and Rico isn't growing because of what he has inherited from his parents.

35. I believe both boys should be given the hormone because they both want to grow and it's not either of their fault as to why they aren't growing.

36. The term "eugenics" is controversial because the meaning makes it seem that because someone is born a certain way, they aren't as good as someone else is, and that doesn't sit well with a lot of people.
37. Vocabulary

gene therapy- the transplantation of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to correct genetic disorders.

germ-line therapy- all cells in the human body that contain genes are considered apart of the germ line therapy

tyrane chapter 5-7

Chapter 5 - Donita Should Cooperate with the Police (or should she?)

24. If you were Donita, would you submit saliva and hair samples to the police to help find the murderer? Why or Why not?

- If I was Donita, of course I would submit my saliva. If I know I'm innocent, then I don't have a reason to worry. No mattter what I believe when it comes to being guilty or innocent.

25. List 3 ways in which DNA fingerprints have been used:

- 1) To identify people. 2) To identify murder victims. 3) To identify soldiers who die in the war.

26. Why might someone object to submitting a DNA sample, even if they weren't guilty of the crime?

- Because they feel they are innocent until proven guilty.

27. Why might courts throw out this evidence if the mass DNA screening leads to the arrest of a murder suspect?

- They throw out the evidence because it would be no use anymore since they found the suspect. You would be innocent in their eyes.

28. Does a DNA test violate a person's privacy? Who should be responsible for storing information about a person's DNA?

- It might invade someone's privacy because their DNA would be permanently in the system.

Chapter 6 - John and Elsa Will Profit from Biotech Farming (or will they?)

29. If you were Elsa and John, would you use the hormone on the cows? Why or why not?

- I would not because like it said, most people don't drink with cow milk that has been drugged. So I would just change my farm advertisement to attract to those people.

30. What kinds of things are being produced by biotech labs? (List at least 3)

- 1) More healthy food. 2) Veggies that stay ripe long. 3) Bacteria that eats up oil spills and waste.

31. Why do animal rights activists object to using BGH on cows?

- Because even though it is safe, they shouldn't be using it on cows period.

32. Why would some people thing that biotech engineers are "playing God"? Do you think this is true?

33. Chapter Vocabulary (define)

genetic engineering: To make changes to a gene and how to replace one gene with another.
selective breeding: The selection of certain seeds or animals for reproduction in order to influence the traits inherited by the next generation.
transgenic: Containing genes from another species.

Chapter 7 - Dr. Lu's Patients Have the Right to Be Tall (or do they?)

34. Why would Dr Lu feel that one Rico and Tim should be treated differently?

- She would feel that way because Tim didn't have all the necessary hormones needed vs. Rico who has inherited his height from both his parents.

35. Do you think both boys should receive the hormone or just one (or even neither)? Defend your position.

- I believe that only Tim should receive the hormone. He wasn't able to get all the proper hormones he needed so now would be a great chance for him.

36. Why is the term "eugenics" controversial?

- Because eugenic ideas often have been used by people to claim that they are better than others.

37. Chapter vocabulary (define)

gene therapy: Treating disorders by altering genes.
germ-line therapy: Treatment that could change the genes you pass on to your children.
