Bioethics Chapter 2 Discussion Questions - Wandell

1. Describe the disease Priya's mother had?

- Priya's mother had Huntington's disease. The disease is fatal and has no treatment. It can cause lack of control of movement and change in mood.

2. If you were Priya, would you get tested for this disease? Why or Why not?

- Yes because then I can inform my family ahead of time. I'd also have a chance to do things I not got to do before the disease catch up.

3. If Priya is tested and found to have the gene for the disease, who else has a right to know?

- I think whoever she chooses to tell is up to her. So whoever she want to have the right to know is her option.

4. What are the pros and cons of having this genetic test performed?

- The pros are having of knowledge of knowing you have this disease so that way you can plan out the rest of your life. The cons are being stressed out from knowing you will die soon and dying.

5. Define the following.

- Stethoscope Genetic Counseling: The counseling of individuals with established/ potential genetic problems.
- Mutation: The change that occurs to the order of the bases appearing in the DNA inside a cell.
- Human Genome Project: Scientists from around the world who learn the language and secrets of the genes.
- Disorder: Problems in how your body functions.
