Bioethics Chapter 3/4 Discussions Questions - Wandell

Chapter 3
11. What did the doctor tell Howard?

- The doctor told Howard that his had a high risk for heart disease because it runs in his family. He told him that he should lose weight, stop smoking, and exercised.

12. Why is it that some people who have the gene for a disease, never actually get the disease. List three possibilities in your answer.

- People may have diseases run in their genes but they may never get it due to the environment that they live in. Three examples are risk diabetes (watch their weight), asthma (may only wheeze around cats), and cancer (don't smoke).

13. How can creating a genetic profile be helpful to a person?

- It can help a person know what paths to take when it comes to their health. It can help you plan your life and avoid triggering the disease.

14. If the genes are found that cause "criminal behavior", should the police be informed of those people that have those genes so they can keep an eye on them? Defend your answer.

- Yes because if they have genes that cause criminal behaviors, then why not make sure they don't do something that will probably get them arrested or in serious trouble.

15. Chapter Vocabulary (define)
genetic determinism: is the mechanism by which genes, along with environmental conditions, determine morphological and behavioral phenotypes.
genetic expressionthe process by which possession of a gene leads to the appearance in the phenotype of the corresponding character.
behavioral genetics: The study of whether and how traits for behavior are inherited.

Chapter 4

- Your lungs could be clogged with mucus with makes it hard to breathe. Also your body may have a hard time digesting food.

18. How can reproductive technology increase a couple's chances of having a healthy child?

- They can take the man's sperm and clean it of any disease then inject it inside the female.

19. If Mollie is tested and found to be a carrier for the disease, do you think the couple should still try to have a child? Why or why not?

- I don't think they should have a child only because Carlos would just have to deal with the disease all over again.

20. If the couple conceives, and a genetic test confirms that the fetus will have the disease, should the pregnancy be terminated? Explain your reasons.

- The pregnancy should be terminated so the couple don't have to deal with the cost and medical things involved with having the child.

- It can get the clean fertilized eggs and place it inside the women uterus.

22. It is possible that in the future, genetic testing on a fetus could be done to determine other traits, like eye color, intelligence, or even probability of obesity or alcoholism. What do you think about this? Would you have your baby tested before it was born? Why or Why not?

- Yes it is possible in the future and I think that it is amazing that people can do that. No because I love my child no matter what, I don't need to have it tested.
