Bioethics Discussion questions - Chapter 3 and 4

Chapter 3 - Howard's Health Is Up to Him (or is it?)
11. What did the doctor tell Howard?
12. Why is it that some people who have the gene for a disease, never actually get the disease. List three possibilities in your answer.
13. How can creating a genetic profile be helpful to a person?
14. If the genes are found that cause "criminal behavior", should the police be informed of those people that have those genes so they can keep an eye on them? Defend your answer.
15. Chapter Vocabulary (define)
genetic expression
genetic determinism
behavioral genetics

Chapter 4 - Carlos and Mollie Can Have a Perfectly Healthy Baby (or can they?)family
16. If you were Mollie, would you have the test to determine if you were a carrier for cystic fibrosis?
17. What are the symptoms of the disease?
18. How can reproductive technology increase a couple's chances of having a healthy child?
19. If Mollie is tested and found to be a carrier for the disease, do you think the couple should still try to have a child? Why or why not?
20. If the couple conceives, and a genetic test confirms that the fetus will have the disease, should the pregnancy be terminated? Explain your reasons.
21. How can ex utero genetic testing help Carlos and Mollie have a healthy child?
22. It is possible that in the future, genetic testing on a fetus could be done to determine other traits, like eye color, intelligence, or even probability of obesity or alcoholism. What do you think about this? Would you have your baby tested before it was born? Why or Why not?
23. (Vocabulary) What is a DNA Marker?

  1. 11) He was at high risk for heart disease because of his family history
    12) -conditions and circumstances of your life and the decisions you make
-few human diseases are triggered by a single gene working by itself
-The "strength" of the genes involved in a disorder can affect its progress
    13) You can avoid passing a certain gene/disease to your offspring
    14) Yes because it would be easier for them to not do crimes
    15) Genetic Expression-The "strength" of the genes involved in a disorder can affect its progress
Genetic Determinism-lead people to make harmful and unfair judgments about themselves and others
Behavioral Genetics- study of whether and how traits for behavior are inherited
    16) Yes because I would want to know if i have the disease.
17)-Lungs become clogged with mucus making it hard to breathe
-The body has a hard time digesting food
18)It helps people reduce their risk of having babies with genetic disorders
    19) I don't think they should because it wouldn't be healthy for the baby or the relationship.
    20) I think the pregnancy should be terminated because why bring a child in this world for them to suffer so much pain like that.

    22) Yes I would have my baby tested because I would want to know things so that way I can plan ahead for the future.
    23) DNA Marker-a gene or other fragment of DNA whose location is known and that often is inherited along with the disorder

  3. CHAPTER THREE
Q1. The doctor told Howard that he could get heart disease because in the past his family has gotten heart disease.

Q2. Three reasons are if factors in your environment do not "trigger" the genes for a disorder.
If you only have some, but not all, of the genes that come into play to cause a particular disease.
If your genes for disorders don't express themselves strongly.

Q3. It could suggest what health-related behaviors you should follow. It could tip you off to have frequent checkups for genetic conditions for which you are at risk. It could help you plan your life so that you avoid behaviors and substances that trigger diseases.

Q4. The police should keep an eye out and know because it’s their fault but not really if they are born with it.
    VOCABULARY
genetic expression - The process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product.
genetic determinism - the mechanism by which genes determine morphological and behavioral phenotype
behavioral genetics - is the study of genetic and environmental influences on behavior

  4. CHAPTER 4
Q1. If I was Mollie I would get the test to find out how I will live the rest of my life and and so I would be prepared for treatment and hospitalization.

Q2. The symptoms are abdomel pain, struggling with breathing and digesting food.

Q3. The reproductive technology is can increase their chances of having a healthy baby because they are more aware and know what their baby genes are.

Q4. I say no because If the the couple carries the baby and it turns out wrong it’s a waste of time and it’s putting the baby at risk which is not good.

Q5. Yes if they baby would be having health problems and will be sick.

Q6. Ex uetro genetic testing can help Carlos and Mollie have a healthy child because it can provide the clean fertilized eggs and place it inside the woman’s uterus.

Q7. I think it can happen one day when technology advances and people get smarter.
