Biology Questions Chapter 5 (Larry Cheeks)

24. If you were Donita, would you submit saliva and hair samples to the police to help find the murderer? Why or Why not?
-Yes, I would submit saliva and hair samples to the police to help find the murderer because I know if I didn't do it I have no problem of letting them get a sample.

25. List 3 ways in which DNA fingerprints have been used:
-Everyone has a unique set of fingerprints, which is why fingerprinting is so useful for identifying people. For nearly 100 years, fingerprints have been used to track criminals. They also have been used to identify murder victims and soldiers killed in combat.

26. Why might someone object to submitting a DNA sample, even if they weren't guilty of the crime?
-Someone who would object to submitting a DNA sample is a person who did the killing or don't want the police to know about them.

27. Why might courts throw out this evidence if the mass DNA screening leads to the arrest of a murder suspect?
-The court might throw out the evidence because the DNA shows that they person who was involved in the killing was the killer.

28. Does a DNA test violate a person's privacy? Who should be responsible for storing information about a person's DNA?
-Yes a DNA test violate a person's privacy.  Her DNA print will go into the police’s data bank, along with prints from all the other factory workers. The prints will be compared to the DNA from the hairs found in the victim’s hand. Unless those hairs came from Donita’s head, her DNA sample should remove her as a suspect.
