Bioethics Discussion Question Chapter 6-7 (Larry Cheeks)

29. If you were Elsa and John, would you use the hormone on the cows? Why or why not?
-Yes, I would to inject their cows with a drug that increases the amount of milk their cows produce.

30. What kinds of things are being produced by biotech labs? (List at least 3)
-People have long known how to use yeast to make bread rise and how to use bacteria to ferment beer and wine or to age cheese.

31. Why do animal rights activists object to using BGH on cows?
-Animal rights groups also have been critical of BGH because it is hard on the cows.

32. Why would some people thing that biotech engineers are "playing God"? Do you think this is true?
-These people recognize that useful products are coming out of biotech. However, they worry that just one experiment gone wrong could cause a lot of harm.

33. Chapter Vocabulary (define)
Genetic engineering- is the modification of an organism's genetic composition by artificial means, often involving the transfer of specific traits, or genes, from one organism into a plant or animal of an entirely different species.
Selective breeding- is the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotype traits (characteristics) by choosing which typically animal or plant males and females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together.
Transgenic- of, relating to, or denoting an organism that contains genetic material into which DNA from an unrelated organism has been artificially introduced.

34. Why would Dr Lu feel that one Rico and Tim should be treated differently?
-DrLu may feel that Tim should have treatment because his one.

35. Do you think both boys should receive the hormone or just one (or even neither)? Defend your position.
-It's even possible that as people hear about this growth hormone, they will demand it for their tall children to make them even taller.

36. Why is the term "eugenics" controversial?
-Eugenics" comes from a Greek word meaning "wellborn." For many people, the word has a bad ring to it. This is because eugenic ideas often have been used by people to claim that they are better than others. 2

37. Chapter vocabulary (define)
Gene therapy- is a form of therapy that involves inserting one or more corrective genes that have been designed in the laboratory, into the genetic material of a patient's cells to cure a genetic disease.
Germ-line therapy-Gene therapy could be targeted to egg and sperm cells (germ cells), however, which would allow the inserted gene to be passed on to future generations. This approach is known as germline gene therapy. The idea of germline gene therapy is controversial.
